چکیده

We consider the problem of computing spanners of Euclidean and unit disk graphs embedded in the two-dimensional Euclidean plane. We are particularly interested in spanners that possess useful properties such as planarity, bounded degree, and/or light weight. Such spanners have been extensively studied in the area of computational geometry and have been used as the building block for constructing efficient and reliable wireless network communication topologies. We study the above problem under two computational models: the centralized and the distributed model. In the distributed model we focus on algorithms that are local. Such algorithms are suitable for the relevant applications (e.g., wireless computing). Under the centralized model, we present an O(n lgn) time algorithm that computes a bounded-degree plane spanner of a complete Euclidean graph, where n is the number of points in the graph. Both upper bounds on the degree and the stretch factor significantly improve the previous bounds. We extend this algorithm to compute a bounded-degree plane lightweight spanner of a complete Euclidean graph. Under the distributed model, we give the first local algorithm for computing a spanner of a unit disk graph that is of bounded degree and plane. The upper bounds on the degree, stretch factor, and the locality of the algorithm dramatically improve the previous results, as shown in the paper. This algorithm can also be extended to compute a bounded-degree plane lightweight spanner of a unit disk graph. Our algorithms rely on structural and geometric results that we develop in this paper.

Homotopic spanners

We introduce the concept of homotopic spanners in the plane with obstacles and show lower bounds on the number of edges that they require. We also provide a construction based on Θ-graphs for constructing homotopic spanners.

Spanners for Geometric Intersection Graphs

Efficient algorithms are presented for constructing spanners in geometric intersection graphs. For a unit ball graph in R, a (1+ǫ)-spanner with O(nǫ) edges is obtained using efficient partitioning of the space into hypercubes and solving bichromatic closest pair problems. The spanner construction has almost equivalent complexity to the construction of Euclidean minimum spanning trees. The resul...

Collective Tree Spanners in Graphs with Bounded Genus, Chordality, Tree-Width, or Clique-Width

In this paper we study collective additive tree spanners for special families of graphs including planar graphs, graphs with bounded genus, graphs with bounded tree-width, graphs with bounded cliquewidth, and graphs with bounded chordality. We say that a graph G = (V,E) admits a system of μ collective additive tree r-spanners if there is a system T (G) of at most μ spanning trees of G such that...

Tree Spanners

A tree t-spanner T of a graph G is a spanning tree in which the distance between every pair of vertices is at most t times their distance in G. This notion is motivated by applications in communication networks, distributed systems, and network design. This paper studies graph theoretic, algorithmic and complexity issues about tree spanners. It is shown that a tree 1-spanner, if it exists, in a...

Connections between Theta-Graphs, Delaunay Triangulations, and Orthogonal Surfaces

Θk-graphs are geometric graphs that appear in the context of graph navigation. The shortest-path metric of these graphs is known to approximate the Euclidean complete graph up to a factor depending on the cone number k and the dimension of the space. TD-Delaunay graphs, a.k.a. triangular-distance Delaunay triangulations introduced by Chew, have been shown to be plane 2-spanners of the 2D Euclid...
